Moffat’s Dark Nights

We’ve been browsing the brand new Doctor Who: The Brilliant Book 2012 and read with interest some words from Steven “The Grand Moff” Moffat.

While avoiding releasing anything too revealing – after all, this book will be a Christmas present for thousands – Moffat confirms that Rory and Amy won’t be in this year’s Christmas Special but they will return next season!

However Moffat isn’t as forthcoming about a return for River Song:

“That’s dependent on Alex Kingston.”

Moffat also offered up a personal explanation as to why the show, in all likelihood, won’t return to our screens until the Autumn of 2012:

“The truth behind the delay next year is: why are we killing ourselves and risking compromising the show, in order to go out in the middle of summer? I’m sick of it. I’m sick of standing in the blazing sunshine, with a barbecue fork in my hand, knowing that Doctor Who is coming on any minute.”

He also goes on to apparently confirm the switch to Autumn with:

“Six o’clock on a sunny Saturday is the middle of the afternoon, whereas six o’clock on a winter or autumn Saturday is dark and exciting.”

It makes sense, doesn’t it? If nothing else, it certainly vindicates the opinions of many long-term fans of Doctor Who, including Kasterborous editor Christian Cawley.

Moffat also offers up some more superlatives to describe the plans for the 50th Anniversary which seem to confirm all your wishes at once:

“Epic, huge, massive, indulgent… all your treats at once”.

There you go.

If the any part of the Anniversary doesn’t include your longed for return of Alpha Centauri then please send your hate mail to Steven Moffat c/o… (Do not send your hate mail to Steven Moffat).

Moffat also adds:

“I guarantee you it’s going to be the best year ever to be a Doctor Who fan. We’re going to be in production for longer than ever, just to do everything that we intend to do”.

David Yates Can Sod Off!

The last two series have been my favourite series of Doctor Who since early Tom Baker. The Moffat era I feel has been wonderful, the show is going from strength to strength in my eyes, but even if I hadn't enjoyed it as much as I do I still wouldn't want this bastardisation of a movie version that's proposed by Harry Potter director David Yates and BBC Worldwide's Jane Tranter to go ahead. David Yates wants to throw out almost fifty years of established continuity to 'start from scratch', so he can essentially make a non-canon version that will have nothing to do with legitimate Doctor Who. Even the non-canon Big Finish audios and the novels have tried to follow the continuity of the TV show. If the man who walks out of the Tardis in any proposed David Yates "Doctor Who" movie calls himself the Doctor but isn't the same character who has been through eleven incarnations from William Hartnell to Matt Smith, then he isn't the Doctor at all...
